'Hitchhiker' success might spell sequels

'Hitchhiker' success might spell sequels

Someone gave the box office the finger this weekend. A thumb, to be exact.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," based on the cult books by Douglas Adams, came in No. 1.

Does this mean that other books in the "Hitchhiker's" series will be given the celluloid treatment?

"We're waiting for hyperspace clearance before we do a sequel," says screenwriter Karey Kirkpatrick. (That would be Disney writing a check). But seriously ... "There's a big galaxy of books out there. If the fans say, "Please give us 'Restaurant,' then who are we to say no?" says executive producer Robbie Stamp, who was a good friend of Adams' before his death. Adams died of a heart attack while writing the final screenplay for the film.

BACK ON EARTH: The so-so numbers of "XXX" this weekend have other contenders saying why, why, why another sequel for the critically savaged Ice Cube action flick is being considered. "XXX3," anyone? Ice Cube says he would welcome a third installment -- even if he got his walking papers. "I like the notion that they throw out at the end of 'State of the Union' that there will be a new XXX agent each time out. They might even consider a woman for the next film," Cube says. "That would be a really fresh take for the franchise. We haven't seen anything that hard-core since 'La Femme Nikita.' "

Cube replaced actor Vin Diesel in the sequel. Reportedly, Diesel wanted too many zeroes to get into "XXX" mode again.
