FEATURE: Meet the man behind Maclean - a multimedia (ham)star in the making
Leading television producer Nicholas Sercombe is creator of a new animated comedy series Hungry Hamsters, set to burst on to our screens - TV, computer and mobile - later this year. He talks to creativematch about his plans for the new CGI series, featuring voice-overs from Harry Hill and Brian Blessed, and his aim to make it a multimedia global success

Meet Maclean, star of Hungry Hamsters (HH) - a new comedy animation series of 26 x half hour programmes which aims to take the multimedia stage by storm.

If creator Nicholas Sercombe has his way Maclean will be a household name in a couple of years' time, appearing on all kinds of screens, just about everywhere.

HH brings together the finest talent from the world of comedy acting, writing and CGI animation, featuring a star principal cast, with voices from Brian Blessed, Jack Davenport, Pam Ferris and Harry Hill, and is being written by acclaimed comedy writing duo Paul Minett and Brian Leveson (2005/06: My Family(BBC1) / Booze Cruise (ITV1).

The series’ production also includes six of the finest sitcom writers of recent years, each working on two episodes each.

Currently in advanced development at leading Danish studio, Krogh Mortensen Animation, in Copenhagen, the series is being produced using the most advanced CGI ever used in an animated television series. With broadband internet access now part of the domestic furniture in most UK homes, and with the advent of blanket digital broadcast, it has always been the intention to develop HH for multiple distribution channels.

Sercombe and the team are further strengthening the digital offering through working with Digital:CC, a specialist digital media and web management agency based in Dublin, with clients including U2, Paramount Pictures and Columbia Records.

Sercombe says: “Television is still the most important medium for any animation programme but we understand there is huge potential for Hungry Hamsters to cross over on to other platforms. This collaboration with Digital:CC will allow consumers and potential partners to preview short HUNGRY HAMSTERS animation downloads for PCs and mobile.

“The multimedia site, launching later this year will also offer consumers the chance to download games, merchandise, music, and eventually the full-length 22’ programmes will become available on the site.

"Hungry Hamsters is a sitcom-using-animation. It’s also a team sitcom, which means that the writers have the luxury of a large Principal Cast to play with. All these characters have depth and warmth but as soon as they are put together they become a disaster zone, which, in comedy, is a golden opportunity. Hence, I have been lucky enough to gather together some of the very top UK sitcom writers for HH," says Sercombe.

What sets Hungry Hamsters apart from other animation series is that it is the first TV series to use such high quality CGI animation and the first CGI to aim for an early evening audience – i.e. 18.00 -19.00, says Sercombe.

As well as the high quality animation, the famous voices of the characters are also a stand out feature. Sercombe says: "I reckoned that all the HH voices must be full of cadence and charisma and fit precisely with each character. I spent many hours in the bath or walking through fields deciding on who was best.

"For instance, the leader, MACLEAN, just had to be played by Brian Blessed – the HH premise demands the ‘troop’ follows a fool into battle time and time again, so the voice had to be brimming over with rousting confidence and pathos.

"DALI is an ON/OFF switch – quiet in contemplation and mad in action Harry Hill has that talent and ability and was the obvious choice. And so on….each actor chosen for their rare and unique individuality as well as their talent."

A mystery famous rock star is lined up to play PSALMANAZAR, a character who appears in occasionally and the bクJ岐e noire of the HH, like The Hood in Thunderbirds.

The series, with its multimedia offering, is also attracting multichannel interest from investors says Sercombe: "With the advent of sales via internet downloads and telephony we have a number of individuals considering funding HH 100% as a brand entity because of its short and long term income prospects.

"For instance, I heard that Aardman Animation’s Angry Kid, a 1 minute download, had 27 million hits last year alone, and it has never even been broadcast on television. We shall, of course, be presenting HH at Mipcom in Cannes next October hoping to attract pre-sales for Series #1.

"While TV is still an extremely important medium for us, we understand there is huge potential for Hungry Hamsters to cross over onto other platforms. We have brought in Digi CC from Dublin to help us achieve that aim and the sites will be up and running in the next 3-24 months. This will give access to short HH animation downloads for PC’s and telephones, games, merchandising, music, and so on before the full-length 22’ programmes become available on the site."

And the long term aim?

"To make it a global success, not only on television but as a brand i.e. it becomes a household name," says Sercombe
