ちなみに1位は、クリストファー・エクレストン主演の最新シリーズが好評だったDoctor Who。日本でもおなじみの宇宙船レッド・ドワーフ号が2位。映画も公開された銀河ヒッチハイク・ガイドが3位。Ultravioletは8位ですが、1シーズンしか作られなかったことを考えると、かなりの健闘だと思いますわ〜!!

Dr Who is top fantasy TV show

Doctor Who has been voted the best British fantasy TV show of all time in a poll out today.

BBC2`s Red Dwarf, the comedy revolving around the dysfunctional crew of a spaceship that travels around the galaxy, came second in the survey.

Douglas Adams` The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, which recently made a return to its birthplace with a new series on Radio 4, came third.

Blake`s 7, the BBC`s flagship sci-fi show screened between 1978 and 1981 came fourth, followed by Patrick McGoohan`s The Prisoner.

Sapphire and Steel, the Seventies sci-fi series about a special force of interdimensional operatives starring Joanna Lumley, is sixth.

Fifties sci-fi classic Quatermass, which the BBC recently remade as a live production, came seventh in the poll compiled for sci-fi magazine SFX, followed by the vampire-hunting adventures of Ultraviolet, starring Jack Davenport.

Sixties espionage show The Avengers took ninth place followed by Robin of Sherwood, whose hero is also set for the remake treatment by the BBC.

SFX editor Dave Bradley said: "There has always been great affection for Doctor Who. It`s a great British institution which has entertained people for generations.

"The recent series has just introduced a whole new generation to the concept and reignited our love for it."

"We scanned over 68 years of home-grown shows and this list shows we have some of the best and most talented writers, producers, directors and actors and actresses in the UK."

Around 4,000 people took part in the poll.

The Top Ten

1. Doctor Who
Recently remade by the BBC, the revamped Doctor Who is set for a second series with Scottish actor David Tennant as the tenth Doctor.

The revival of Doctor Who, which began in 1963, has been a fantastic success for the BBC.

BBC1 is reported to have spent £1m on each 45-minute episode of the show, which starred Christopher Eccleston in the first series.

2. Red Dwarf
There was a gap of three years between the writing of the pilot for Red Dwarf and the transmission of the first series.

The script was rejected by various BBC chiefs until it was picked up by BBC North, based in Manchester.

Starring Craig Charles as a lowly technician on the mining ship, the show ran for eight series between 1988 and 1999, clocking up 52 episodes in the process.

3. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was recently given the Hollywood treatment starring The Office actor Martin Freeman, as adventure hero Arthur Dent.

The story became a cultural phenomenon after it first appeared as a BBC Radio 4 series in 1978.

It evolved into a five part trilogy of novels, which have
gone on to sell millions of copies worldwide, as well as a BBC TV series.

Radio 4 recently made a new adaptation of the radio series, starring some of the original cast.

Its creator Douglas Adams, died in 2001, aged just 49, following a heart attack.

4. Blake`s 7
The low-budget Seventies TV series was created by Terry Nation, who came up with the idea of the Daleks in Doctor Who.

Gareth Thomas starred as rebel Roj Blake who has been robbed of his memories in a corrupt galactic federation which drugs its citizens into submission.

Blake`s 7 was a byword for cheap special effects and stiff acting but almost one fifth of the UK population tuned in across four series.

5. The Prisoner
Patrick McGoohan starred in the psycho-thriller about a man known only as Number Six.

The Sixties ITV series sees Number Six face innumerable perils and obstacles.

At £75,000 an episode, it was the most expensive in the world at the time.

6. Sapphire and Steel
The sci-fi series starred Joanna Lumley and David McCallum, it featured a special force of paranormal detectives tasked with protecting the universe from evil forces.

The ITV show first hit the screens in 1979 and ran until 1982.

7. Quatermass
BBC4 recently screened a live production of the Fifties sci-fi classic The Quatermass Experiment.

Originally broadcast in 1953, The Quatermass Experiment was so frightening that audiences were said to have fainted in front of their TV sets.

Only two of the six original Quatermass episodes, which were filmed live, remain in the BBC archives - the others have been lost.

The BBC followed up the series with Quatermass II (1955) and Quatermass and the Pit (1957).

The series spawned a Hammer Horror film, which was released in 1955.

8. Ultraviolet
Set in London in the 20th Century, Ultraviolet featured a secret war being waged between humans and vampires.

It was released by Channel 4 in the UK in 1998 and had a cult following.

It starred Jack Davenport as Detective Sergeant Mike Colefield, who gets drawn into the nightmarish world.

9. The Avengers
The fantasy spy featuring a suave British agent and his female partners ran from 1961 to 1969.

The Avengers has been seen in more than 125 countries in 30 languages.

Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg paired up as as uber-agents John Steed and Emma Peel.

Sydney Newman, director of the Drama Association British Corporation, came up with the idea in 1960.

Other stars in the show included Honor Blackman and Joanna Lumley starred in The New Avengers, a revival of the TV series.

10. Robin of Sherwood
The 1980s ITV series Robin of Sherwood was the last TV adaptation of Robin Hood.

It starred Michael Praed - and later Jason Connery - as the thorn in the side of the Sheriff of Nottingham.

BBC1 recently announced that it wanted to give the swashbuckling adventures of Robin Hood the Dr Who treatment with a new Saturday evening drama series.
