ストレートプレイ部門では、ロンドンのナショナルシアターからブロードウェイに進出したWar Horseが作品賞はじめとして6冠。幸運にも先日ロンドンで見ることが出来たので、我が事のように嬉しくなってしまいました。短期間にニューヨークとロンドンで4本の演劇を見たのですが、一番「お芝居を見た！」という充実感でいっぱいになったのが、このWar Horseでした。「第一次世界大戦時の馬と少年の友情をハリボテの馬で演じる」と聞くと「なんだそりゃ？」ですが、授賞式中継であの馬の動きを見るだけでも、魅力の片鱗が伝わったのでは。ロンドンまたはニューヨークに行く予定のある方、ぜひぜひ劇場へ足を運んで下さい。超人気作なので、チケットはお早めに〜！

プレゼンターがクリス・ロックの時点でもうバレちゃってる感じでしたが、下馬評通り、「ブック・オブ・モルモン」が作品賞、脚本賞、楽曲賞を含む9部門受賞。War Horseともども、来年のトニー賞シーズンにNHKで放送してくれることを願います！

80年代にゲイコミュニティの命を次々と奪っていったエイズについて、警鐘を鳴らした作品The Normal Heartが受賞。授賞式の数日前に、司会のニール・パトリック・ハリスがtwitterで、この作品を見て衝撃を受けたという感想をtweetしていたので、予想通りでした。オープニングナンバーでは「ブロードウェイはゲイのためだけじゃないんです。門戸開いてるよ♪」と歌ってましたが、俳優部門をほぼ独占したThe Normal Heartは、やはりブロードウェイのゲイコミュニティの心に訴えるものが大きかったのだと思います。

イギリスで好評だったお芝居をブロードウェイに移植したエルサレムが受賞。「壁を通り抜ける」というナゾナゾのような受賞スピーチは、アメリカの詩人ルイス・ジェンキンスの詩からの引用。
"Unlike flying or astral projection, walking through walls is a totally earth-related craft, but a lot more interesting than pot-making or driftwood lamps" "The worst things are wire fences, maybe it's the molecular structure of the alloy or just the amount of give in a fence, I don't know, but I've torn my jacket and lost my hat in a lot of fences."

せっかくドレスを着ているのに、上にGジャンを羽織っての受賞。彼女なりのステートメントなのでしょうか。新作ですが「いつかチェーホフのような古典になって、若い女優さんが私の役を演じ続けるでしょう」というスピーチも、作品を愛する気持ちは分かるけれど、「俺の偉業」を讃えているようにも聞こえなくもなく。実際に見た方、どうだったのでしょうか？？

映画では、詐欺師のフランクが主役で、刑事は助演だったように思うのですが、ミュージカル版では、刑事を主役にしたのですね。昨年とは打って変わって、ハリウッドのセレブ俳優ではなく、ブロードウェイやウェストエンド生え抜きの俳優の受賞が目立った今年は、これが二度目のトニー賞受賞になる、芋洗坂係長・・・ではなく、Norbert Leo Butさんが主演男優賞に。超絶パフォーマンスでした。
